Bucky shuddered gently against Penny, while his mind whirled with her revelation. “You have to tell Steve.”
“I can’t. Not just yet.”
"Penelope Grace,” he growled against her neck.
“Bucky. Not just yet. I’ll tell him when I’ve gone through all the options, but until that time, how can I place more stress on him? He’s off saving the world. He doesn’t need to be thinking about me while he’s doing it.”
"Penny…” Bucky sighed and looked at her, but gave up when she gave him the stubborn face.
"I’m not giving up, Buck. I won’t. I promise, but I have to do this my way.”
"Stubborn as a mule,” Bucky grumbled, tugging her close so he could rest his cheek on the top of Penny’s head.
"Ma’am? Sorry to interrupt,” Friday said into the silence. "The detective is back, and he brought friends.”
Bucky growled a second time against Penny, far more feral and angrier than before. "What kind of friends?”

Chapter Summary: Big Bad isn’t dumb, and it’s bad for a reason. The story of how Agent Weber came to be in this position and came to despise Captain America and all he loves is part of a long and hateful history, part of the legacy of HYDRA. Weber’s lineage made it impossible to become anything other than a highly-trained ruthless double agent, with two goals in life – to initiate HYDRA’s resurgence as a force for destruction through the creation of an army of Super Soldiers, and to ensure the safety and security of the only person in life she held dear. Nothing would stop her from making these things happen.

I *really* thought this chapter was going one way when I started, but Weber’s backstory really sucked me in. Given that I hadn’t given much time to explain motivation and history, I took longer on it than I expected. I hope you all enjoy – I would love to hear your feedback, as always. The sky over the camp burned red, smoke pouring out of the main building. Soldiers ran with the unmitigated panic of those who knew their end was near. Wilhelm Weber Strucker was only 13 years old, but remembered exactly what happened next.

As you walked over to kiss him and you recognized that he was in his stealth suit and not street clothes, you laughed as a thought came to you. “Did Clint drop you on the roof? Do we need to move somewhere with a landing pad?”
He held onto your waist and leaned against you. “What kind of guy would I be if I didn’t get back for my best girl’s birthday? Anyway, it wasn’t much of a jump.” You swallowed hard, grateful this wasn’t something else he was going to ask you to do. You hoped.

Lily woke slowly and stretched her arms out, expecting to encounter Michael’s warm body. When she found only an empty bed, the night before came rushing back with a clarity which had her eyes snapping open. She thrust her fist against her mouth to stifle her sob, unable to stop the tears from shaking her small frame.
Mom… The pain was so sharp and fresh it hurt to breathe let alone cry. But grief would need to wait until she figured out where the heck she was.
An unfamiliar room greeted her when she managed to catch her breath. Then her eyes landed on the man sleeping propped on his fist in the corner. Her body seized as her mind whirled with the consequences disregarding secret would now have.

Tears streamed down her face, ribbons of sorrow, showcasing her broken heart as Lily Tangela opened the door to the apartment she shared with her boyfriend, Michael. She had received the worst possible news tonight and needed the comfort only he could provide.
Her mother, her beautiful, sweet, wonderful mother had died. The cancer she’d been fighting for years had finally taken her life in a long-awaited, yet still much too sudden way.
The news had come only an hour into her shift, seeing her breaking down in her Captain’s office. A new officer for NYPD, Lily was just settling into her career, hadn’t yet been assigned a partner, and now with this tragedy, she was being told to take whatever time she needed to grieve and bury her mother. It was the worst thing that could have happened.
Her sob was soft as she pushed open the door and stumbled to a stop. The table before the window was set for two. Candles glowed. A wine glass, one of a pair, had a smear of ridiculously red lipstick on the rim.
It was eleven o’clock at night, and Lily was supposed to be working the graveyard shift.
Penny woke up warm and rested. Her body was soft, lax, and she felt better than she had in months. When the quiet snore came from the chest beneath her ear, she smiled. It wasn’t the first time she’d cuddle up on Steve, but when she lifted her head, it wasn’t her clean shaven blond brother whose body she’d been resting against, but a scruffy-faced brunette.
The night before came flooding back and caused her heart to kick once hard before she closed her eyes and fought down the wave of angry nausea. The attack, Marcus, what she’d revealed to Bucky, all of it made her feel weak and tired, two things she couldn’t afford right now.
“Hey, dollface.”
She opened her eyes to peer at Bucky, a smile curling his lips.
His fingers lightly stroked the length of her spine. “Sorry about crashing on your bed. Must have dozed off.”
“It’s fine, Buck. I slept better last night than I have in a while,” Penny murmured, pushing off his chest to sit up, finding she’d wrapped her leg over his thigh in the night and it was trapped now between them. It was a rather embarrassing position to be in considering she was practically straddling his leg, but when she made to pull away, he flexed his knees. “James?”
“It’s too early to be up,” he said softly, pressing against her spine to make her sink back against him. “Go back to sleep for a while.”
Chapter Summary: So much had happened in the last few days. You got engaged, you were surprised by your wonderful fiancee with a surprise engagement party, and life was pretty good. You were ready for another big step, and not ready for the next step in the criminal investigation into your abduction. Life isn’t always a fantasy, even when you’re engaged to Captain America.

The day after your surprise engagement party, your head was a bit foggy, but you were crystal-clear aware of how lucky you were to have so many people care about your happiness. Even though Hallmark would have been proud of your sappiness, your level of desire for your fiance, lying next to you, was definitely not appropriate for a greeting card. You loved waking up next to Steve, it made your entire day better. You knew he’d been wanting that, too, for a long time.
Summary: Life continues with bumps in the road, but you get over them (or at least go around them). You talked out the problems between Maria and Steve, you finally spilled the entire story of your breakup with John, and you took a big step to conquering a really big fear you still had, even all those months after your abduction. You always knew, that no matter what happened, you had some really amazing people in your life to support you and carry you through, and they came through with flying colors when you needed them.

You had a coffee date with Maria. You were not looking forward to it, which made you feel off kilter and wrong inside. You suspected a showdown was inevitable and though conflict was not your idea of a good time, Maria thrived on it. Steve had asked if he should come to straighten things out first hand, but you knew his presence would only exacerbate the problem. For this go round, you wanted it to just be you and her hashing it out. You knew that despite her relief at your safe return, she was pissed at Steve and generally bewildered why you didn’t feel the same way. You took a deep breath when you walked into the coffee shop, saying a silent prayer that she knew how important both she and Steve were in your life. You gave her a long and hard hug when she arrived, noticing that she was just as edgy as you felt.
Summary: It was time. You and your girls were returning home, for the first time since your abduction. You would miss the compound where you had recuperated and come back to real life, but you were excited to go home and start trying to live a “normal” life. Having Steve and Bucky beside you on your journey certainly made it easier, and knowing you’d have protection agents near both you and your girls, made everything better. You all had a chance to celebrate your progress and happiness before you moved back home, with an unexpected surprise from Steve.

Even though they were older, you always checked in on your girls when they slept, and since you were reunited with them, it became a necessity. You kissed them both and slipped over to Steve’s suite, the next floor up.
Thankfully, he wasn’t asleep, and smiled when he answered the door. “What’s up? Everything ok?”
