It is actually legal to accept commissions for fanfic, same as fanart. What isn’t legal, is writing fanfic for a for-profit publication because the money for that would technically belong to the author. But if someone asks you to write a fanfic and they will pay for your time, that’s legal. Morally, though, that’s up to you.

While I understand where you’re coming from, all forms of accepting payment for intellectual property that doesn’t belong to you is illegal. [X][X

Honestly, it does boil down to how you feel about it morally. Ultimately, I/We think it’s wrong to profit off of the works of other people.

Exactly why I Beta for free even though I have an editing business! Thank you for voicing this!!

I’ll admit that it’s been weighing heavily on me as of late. It’s always bothered me, asking for money for something that does not belong to you – intellectual property – and it’s hard for me to understand why people just don’t care. Especially when they’re ‘confronted’ about it.

*Gets of my soapbox.*

Hi there. I’ve seen a lot of posts about authors and artists taking commissions, posting on patreon, and now, offering their beta services; all for money. What is your opinion on that?

This might be an unpopular opinion and I might upset some people, but here goes.

Straight up, I don’t like it.

While writing and publishing fanfiction is one thing, asking for, and accepting, money for it is wrong. It. Is. Illegal. The characters, and the world they belong in, do not belong to the fanfiction authors. They belong to their creator, not us. This goes for edits, banners, avatars, etc.

Now… asking for money to beta. No. No. No. You’re not a professional editor, and what you’re reading, offering your advice on, it is illegal. Once again, the characters the fanfiction authors are writing about does not belong to them. So, by accepting payment, you are performing an illegal act.

Earning money off of intellectual property that does not belong to you is wrong.
